🏇 Ayr Gold Cup: The Full Report

How’s it going?

Good, good to firm ground in the south – soft ground in the north.

It’s that time of year.

👉 There are nine races on ITV3 – five at Ayr and four from Newbury. 

👉 Ayr stages its biggest Flat race of the year – the Ayr Gold Cup (3.40).

👉 Newbury stages the Group 2 Mill Reef Stakes (2.12). 

👉 After winning at Doncaster last week, Desert Castle is the new 5/1 favourite for next year’s 2,000 Guineas. 

👉 In next year’s Derby betting, Darkness Falls is the new 8/1 favourite after last week’s win at the Irish Festival.

👉 Jockey Saffie Osborne last week became the first female jockey to win a British Classic – she could now ride in November’s Melbourne Cup.

Not a bad debut for our ‘Edges’ last week, with six winners, including one at 12/1.

In fact, they actually returned a clear overall level stakes profit of +£5 to a £1 stake – or +£10 profit to Betfair SP.

We improved on our only previous effort last week when hitting 4 out of 6 legs, so we’re going in again.

And, in true Paddock Report style, we’re showing no fear in tackling the hardest card of the day at Ayr, where big fields and mud galore await – both of which could trigger a big dividend.

For the record, the last five Ayr Gold Cup day dividends paid: 

£328.10 (2025); £715.00 (24); £113.50 (23); £1,924.20 (22); £290.60 (21) 

1.20: We’ll kick leg one off with both Super Trends qualifiers: McMurray and Northern Express. Both have winning form in the mud.

1.55: Several of these are returning from an absence, so recent fitness could be an advantage on the ground. Fast Tracker has form figures of 1151 over 1m1f-1m2f on soft/heavy, while Sea Scout handles conditions and could get his own way in front.

2.30: Once again we’re going with three of our Super Trends horses: Advertised, Jungle Drums & Mirabeau. One of them has to make the top four, right?

3.05: Irish-bred runners have a good record in this race, so Silent Beauty and Dark Issue look solid and handle the mud. 

3.40: You guessed it, trends time again – step forward Far Above Dream, Evening Saigon & Ardisia. 

4.15: Trainers Kevin Ryan and Karl Burke won four of the last seven runnings of this novice between them, so hopefully Cagney or Golden Snouk can make the top three. 

Perm: 2 x 2 x 3 x 2 x 3 x 2 = 144 lines (a 10p unit makes a total stake of £14.40).

Here’s who The Purist is backing on Saturday…

Newbury 3.55 Castle Rock

I prefer double-figure stalls up the straight at Newbury, and Castle Rock has bagged a decent pitch in stall 10 of 20 runners in this 7f handicap. This 3yo has improved with every run to date, winning his last two in 2025 before a nice reappearance at Newmarket last month. He was second that day to a horse now rated 103, which makes Castle Rock appear well handicapped off a 2lb higher mark of just 91. The fact he comes from the in-form Charlie Appleby yard is a bonus. 

Newbury 4.30 Drymee

It’s a smaller ten-runner field for the following mile handicap in which Drymee represents the in-form James Fanshawe yard. A winner of three of his last four races, he’s been raised 10lb in the weights for the last of those, which was an emphatic 5L win in a similar Sandown handicap. He is simply an improving handicapper who could be rated 100+ by the end of the season, and can add this race to his 2026 haul.

Ayr 3.40 Fine Interview

Hopefully, some of you took the advised 33/1 about Fine Interview for the Ayr Gold Cup.

The soft ground will be ideal; the yard are having winners, and the form of his York run (7th of 20) was boosted significantly last weekend – three of the first 11 home from York have since won big sprint handicaps next time.

The key is how he’s ridden. He’s at his best when covered up for a late run – not burning fuel near the front. James Doyle has ridden him differently on eight occasions, but hopefully he’ll know the importance of switching him off for a race that’s worth £92k to the winner – especially if there is a strong headwind.

It’s not often a couple of winners catch our eye from the same meeting at Yarmouth, but that’s what happened in the Paddock Report office during midweek.

Marhaba Athmani (2yo)

Was babyish in the paddock on his racecourse debut, but overcame that to show a nice change of speed where it mattered – if you can access the replay, it’s worth watching. Should cope in better company.

Alice De Clare (3yo)

Ninety minutes later, this improving filly theoretically landed her fifth win in six outings – she was disqualified for one of them. Her jockey never moved a muscle for this simple win, and she can also handle a step up in grade.

Scottish trainer Jim Goldie will no doubt have a few ready for Ayr on Saturday, and his midweek interview with At The Races is worth a read.

📌 Favourite backers looking for one in their Saturday Acca may want to consider the market leader in Newmarket’s opener (1.15) – the jolly won in seven of the last eight years.

At the other end of the scale at Newmarket is Gorgeous Mr George, who might be worth a nibble in the Amateur Jockeys' Cambridgeshire (5.30). An improving back-to-back winner over a mile in June, he wasn’t suited to dropping back to 7f next time (kept on well), before a blocked path at Redcar. The trainer/jockey combo won this race two years ago.
