How’s it going?

Since we last met, over 300 races have taken place in the UK. That’s a lot of form to keep up with.

But don’t stress. We’re here to make life easier so you can enjoy this weekend’s sunshine.

Racing Things To Know 🗞️

The Irish 2,000 Guineas headlines on Saturday. The hot favourite is Gstaad, runner-up from the English 2,000 Guineas.

The Irish 1,000 Guineas takes place on Sunday. True Love, who won the English 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket bids for the double.

Her stablemate Precise reopposes after finishing seventh at Newmarket. Aidan O’Brien has a history of seeing his beaten runners from the English 1,000 Guineas improving to land the Irish 1,000 Guineas – Lake Victoria the latest 12 months ago (only sixth at Newmarket).

It promises to be a cracking rematch.

Elsewhere, Haydock stage the biggest race in Britain via the Group 2 Temple Stakes – note, the ground on Friday still had ‘soft’ in it.

Goodwood have their Derby and Oaks trials.

Secret Stats 🤫

You won’t find these anywhere else. Honest.

First, the big one 🥁

Of the 35 winners on Haydock’s Saturday card during the last five years, 25 came from the top two in the betting.

Those 25 winners (from 72 bets) produced a £1 stake profit of +£32 🤯

Here’s the breakdown:

2025: 6-14 (+£4)
2024: 5-15 (£8)
2023: 4-15 (£0)
2022: 5-14 (£12)
2021: 5-14 (£8)

At Goodwood, trainer Charlie Johnston has followed his father Mark’s liking for the track. Johnston Junior is 3 wins from 5 runs (+£8) on this corresponding day in Sussex.

At York, trainer Richard Hannon’s last six runners sent north for this Saturday fixture finished:

2025: 1st of 21 (7/2)
2025: 4th of 22 (40/1)
2023: 1st of 14 (8/1)
2023: 8th of 14 (18/1)
2021: 2nd of 8 (5/1)
2021: 3rd of 16 (20/1)

In Ireland, the Curragh’s big-two day meeting saw second favourites outgun favourites during the last five years:

Second favs: 32 wins from 124 runs (+£25)
Favourites: 26 wins from 116 runs (-£38)

Winners’ odds included: 18/1, 10/3

David Marnane – May 16 to May 20

3 wins from 8 runs (+£15 to a £1 stake)

Placed odds included: 11/1, 10/1

The Purist

Here’s who The Purist is backing on Saturday…

1.25 Goodwood - Startled

This could be a ‘draw race’. If so, a low stall may be required. Startled bags stall 5 of 18 and can grab an all-important prominent position before the sharp bend. A winner of three of his last four races, he may not have stopped winning yet.

2.20 Haydock Langstone & Astrazar

Langstone showed big improvement when stepped up to 7f this season, winning both races. He scored with a bit to spare at Kempton last month, and his breeding suggests another furlong will suit. He’ll also handle any ease in the ground.

Astrazar also improved for the step up to 7f, winning his last two races in 2025. He never showed his true form when blocked on his return at Newbury but finished full of running. The extra furlong should help.

2.58 Haydock Venetian Sun

This high-class filly won her first four races last season (5f-6f) before losing the unbeaten record over 7f in October, despite a very creditable fourth. She then failed to stay a mile on her return in the 1,000 Guineas, and is now dropped back to sprinting for this assignment. Expect to see her true colours.

The Traitors (Favourites To Avoid) ☠️

Not all favourites win – here are several worth taking on…

3.15 York Danielle

Set to go off at odds-on but both wins came on soft and heavy ground. The ground is drying out at York and she is 0-8 away from the mud.

3.30 Haydock Night Raider

This will be his seventh race outside of Listed/Group 3 company, placed just once. He may also prefer a longer break as his record when appearing within the previous 30 days is 0-4 (all unplaced).

4.30 Cartmel Halfway House

Will be popular after winning last time but is back up the weights to an official mark he’s never won from, and over a trip that just stretches him.

7.30 Windsor Galactic Glow

An eye-catching second at Bath last time, a track where four of his five career wins took place. However, at Windsor, he is 0-9 (unplaced on seven occasions), while his record in big-field races with 12 runners or more is 0-28.

Front-runners 🚀

After last week’s 7/2 winner in the Weekend Workshop section we thought to list another three races that may potentially see a lone front-runner favoured.

1.25 Goodwood – Catullus
There’s a chance Hilitany could challenge up front early on, but Catullus has a good draw in stall 2 on the inside rail. It will be up to his jockey to grab it.

3.05 Curragh – Bucanero Fuerte
Big Gossey could be an early threat, but Bucanero Fuerte led in his last four races and can make his superior early pace tell.

6.30 Windsor – Galba
Not a confirmed front-runner but always up with the early pace, and this is a race littered with patiently-ridden runners. It’s therefore possible he could find himself on an easy lead.

Stable Talk 🐴

The trainer of Venetian Sun, one of the market leaders for Haydock’s Sandy Lane Stakes (2.58), spoke to the Sporting Life site in midweek.

He said: "She definitely didn't stay in the Guineas (a mile). I'm not saying she'd have won at seven furlongs, so maybe she didn't put her best foot forward, but she's come out of the race in great shape, we're very happy with her."

Weekend Workshop 🧰

Trainer and jockey form can change within minutes.

A recent case took place when trainer Charlie Appleby headed into last weekend without a winner in 28 days before ending the rot with a double on Friday. He then repeated the dose on Saturday with the Lockinge winner and another success at 22/1.

The message is to watch out for a sudden change of form, which can lead to immediate profits. One method is to keep a list of trainers and jockeys who are currently out of form, and then check the daily results to see if things turned.

A few current trainers to look out for, should their fortunes change, are:

Ed Bethell – 1 winner in the last 14 days (31 runners)
Gary and Josh Moore – 1 winner in the last 30 days (55 runners)

Three To Follow 📝

Hope you followed Jet Warrior from last week -- he scored at 13/2 on Wednesday 😉.

Here are three more exclusive names from the Paddock Report database of horses to follow.

Trucial Pearl – Yet to win in 11 outings over 5f-7f, but shaped on several occasions like a step up to a mile is needed – the distance her mother (dam) was a three-time winner over.

Everatease – His sixth placed effort at Leicester two outings ago (5f) since saw the two horses in front of him win next time out. This colt then ran another cracker when fourth at Doncaster last week (5f). A step up to 6f could get him off the mark.

Frankies Dream - An uncomplicated four-year-old who went up the weights for winning six times in 2025. He’s now dropped back down and served notice at Thirsk last week when finishing third, that he’s ready to strike again.

We Almost Forgot…

📌 The ante-post markets for Royal Ascot are out, and one horse in the Paddock Report office caught our eye.

In the Royal Hunt Cup, Indalo, is around the 14/1 mark following last week’s encouraging reappearance at Newbury when second.

That will put him spot on for Wednesday June 17 👑

Quick Saturday TV Guide

ITV (free): Curragh: 3.40; Haydock: 1.45, 2.20, 2.58, 3.30, 4.05; Goodwood: 1.25, 2.00; York: 2.05, 2.40, 3.15.

Next weekend is something of a breather ahead of the Derby in a fortnight.

We won’t ‘be on our holidays’, though, as all the televised action from Chester and Haydock will be covered.

Until then…

..keep ‘em peeled 👀
